Wood floor repair
The repair depends on the degree of floor damage and on the kind of boards it is made of. The squeak of floor boards and light damages may be removed rather quickly, even without outside help. The hole (diameter mustn’t exceed 15mm ) is drilled in the squeaky floor board over the joist. Then it is filled up with the cement grout. In 48 hours the dook with the glue is hammered in the hole, the excess things are cut off or smoothed out and the covering is put – lacquer or wax.
If the cracks appeared because floor boards have got too dry, the floor may be renewed with the help of crack filler. The screws are screwed in among the floor boards in such a way that their heads are buried to 5mm and only after that the cracks are filled up with the crack filler. When the crack filler dries, its excess is ground, and the floor is covered with the protective decorative coating.
When separate floor boards are damaged, they must be removed. As a rule, it’s rather hard to find floor boards of the same thickness as the other ones but even this problem can be solved. Cardboard or ruberoid must be put on the joists under the thin boards, and in those places where boards are laid on the joists the slots of necessary depth are made in the thick ones.
Worn out floor may be renewed by installing the same floor boards but turning them to the reverse side. All the floor boards should be taken off, protected from the edge, straightened and nailed to the joists that new reverse side is on the top. Then the joint filler is applied and when it gets dry, the floor is covered with the protective decorative coating – lacquer or paint. In order to form strong protective film, that will protect the wood from outside exposures, three layers of coating are recommended.
The repair of wood floor made of matchboards is a little bit harder because the separate floor boards are really hard to remove. In order to take off a damaged component of such construction, you’ll have to saw the groove off from the board itself with the help of hacksaw. After that one or several boards are taken off from the complete covering and should be replaced by the new ones. The cracks among the boards are filled up with the crack filler in the color of wood, then the “patch” is covered by paint or lacquer in order it doesn’t differ from the rest.
The most difficult is the repair of parquet floor – its boards stuck to the foundation are hard to remove without damaging the whole construction. But it is possible and if it’s necessary the “patches” may be put on such type of floor. The difference between the old parquet and renewed floor boards is considered to be the main disadvantage of the restoration of such type of floor covering. Some people use the elements of the decorative parquet that gives the singularity to the room and decorates not just the floor but the whole interior. Basically the idea of “the parquet repair” comes to the grinding of the coating and covering the new one. Shallow cracks are restored by scraping. That is when the old protective decorative coating is removed together with the thin layer of wood. After scraping the grinding is required and then the protective layers of lacquer or wax are covered.
In order not to repair the floor just in few years after the installation, it should be treated properly; the optimal temperature-humidity conditions should be sustained in the room; the floor should be protected from cracks and other mechanical effects. Known by experience, it’s much easier to prevent damages than to remove them.
